SAN FRANCISCO (KRON) -- Three people were rescued by a good Samaritan vessel from their burning, sinking boat off the Marin County coast on Friday, according to the U.S. Coast Guard.

Just before noon, a distress call was transmitted by a good Samaritan who reported seeing smoke coming from a 32-foot vessel 5 miles off Stinson Beach and a person on board waving their arms. The Coast Guard dispatched a 47-foot motor lifeboat crew and MH-65 Dolphin helicopter aircrew.

One of the boaters on board the burning vessel later recalled that it began taking on water rapidly through the stern engine compartment.

Before the Coast Guard arrived, the good Samaritan vessel rescued all three people from the burning boat, which eventually sank. The three survivors were transferred to the Coast Guard lifeboat and evaluated.

“After determining none of the survivors required medical assistance, the crew transported them to Pier 45, their original point of departure,” USCG wrote.

The cause of the incident remains under investigation.
