A grandmother had the Halloween treat of a lifetime on Saturday, thanks to a social media post made by her grandson.
Cade Bearfield of New Hampshire told sister station WMUR that his grandmother, Pauline Fiest, known as Meme, loves Halloween.
“Who isn’t a fan? It’s great. You can pass out candy, see all these cute kids in their costumes; it’s fun. It’s just a fun time,” Fiest said.
But Bearfield said his family hasn’t seen many trick-or-treaters since moving to their home in Manchester.
So, Bearfield made a social media post asking for the community’s help.
“I said that everyone was welcome to come trick-or-treating at our house on Saturday because, you know, my grandmother, she sits outside in the cold, in costume every year, and, you know, she’s turning 70 and she’s going to be retiring soon,” Bearfield said. “And we just really wanted to make this a big, special Halloween for her.”
His post didn’t go unanswered. Dozens of trick-or-treaters showed up before dusk.
Charlene from Manchester stopped by with her family.
“I said that’s our first stop; before we do anything, we’re going to make this woman’s Halloween special,” Charlene said.
Beatrice Whiteman told WMUR she saw the post on social media and did the same.
“Thought it was a really cool thing that someone was doing and just wanted to come out and support the community,” Whiteman said.
Fiest was both surprised and grateful for the outpouring of community support.
“You just see people coming, and they’re smiling, and they’re happy, and it doesn’t matter how old you are or how young you are; everyone just seems to be having a good time. So, it’s good,” Fiest said.
Fiest was dressed as Elmo for the occasion.
